Reflective Supervision

What is Reflective Supervision?

Reflective practice is the foundation for life-long learning. It involves thinking about your own experiences in order to learn from them and to build mastery in a field of work. It can be done individually or in conversation with a trained professional. Reflective Supervision involves this second kind of reflective practice.

Reflective Supervision involves meeting regularly with someone trained in reflective practice (a Supervisor) to discuss the experiences and challenges you encounter in your work. The goal is to help you develop clarity and conviction about future action. This is achieved through thinking critically about your experiences, seeing them from different perspectives, and in a way that helps you develop your own insights and solutions.

A Reflective Supervisor is independent of your work or organisation; they’re not your manager nor do they report on you. They’re also committed to confidentiality. This allows you to feel comfortable sharing your experiences, thoughts, and feelings without fear of judgment or repercussion. This is essential to being able to reflect on your experiences at work and to learn from them.

What are the benefits of Reflective Supervision?

There are many benefits of engaging in Reflective Supervision. These include:

Improved decision-making skills. By reflecting on their past decisions and the factors that influenced them, you can gain a better understanding of your own decision-making process and identify areas where you can improve.

Greater self-awareness. Reflective supervision can help you become more aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as your own biases and blind spots. This can lead you to more effective leadership and decision-making.

Improved communication skills. Reflective Supervision can help you become a better listener and communicator. This can be essential for building trust and rapport with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders.

Manage stress and burnout. Contemporary working life can be stressful and demanding. This is especially true in the helping professions, like education for example, where burnout and vicarious trauma are occupational risks. Reflective Supervision can provide a safe space for you to process your emotions, learn how to manage stress more effectively, and build occupational resilience over the long term.

Increased confidence. Reflective Supervision can assist you to develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and self-efficacy in your professional life. This can help you become a better leader and decision-maker.

Improved team morale. If you’re in a position of leadership, engaging in regular collaborate reflective practice will enable you to become more reflective and self-aware. As a result, you’re better able to create a positive and supportive work environment for your team members. This can lead to increased morale and greater levels of professional satisfaction.

Why reflect with a trained professional?

While there are many benefits of personal reflective practices, through journaling or other techniques, engaging in reflection with a trained professional has unique benefits. These include:

Perspective taking. When you reflect with another person, they can offer you a different perspective on your experiences. This can help you to see things from a new angle and gain a deeper understanding of your own thoughts and feelings.

Validation. When you share your reflections with another person, they can validate your experiences and help you to feel understood. This can be especially helpful if you are struggling with difficult or complex situations in your professional life.

Challenge. A good reflective listener can also challenge your thinking and help you reframe things to help you see issues in a new light. This can help you to grow and develop in your role.

Support. Reflective listening can provide a safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can be especially helpful if you are going through a difficult or challenging time in your work.

Accountability. Having someone to hold you accountable for your reflections, and the decisions that may flow from them, can help you to stay on track and make progress in your work and professional life.
